September Ends

It’s that time of year when we gently kiss Green Day awake from their slumber and welcome the best month of the year: OCTOBER. I am in the northern hemisphere, so this means I can finally start wearing clothes I like without sweating all the time, having hot tea all day, and I’ll be able to move my legs in bed because the cats will be on their heated blanket and not on me. We’ll all have heated blankets! (As long as we can pay the electric bill.)

I’m sure just by posting this I have jinxed the cooler weather and a massive heat wave will ruin everything. Such is the way of climate destruction. And this will probably be the coolest autumn of your life, so enjoy it.

For the next month, I’ll be posting my October TV and film suggestions on every even day. I encourage you to watch them and then go on fedi and tell me how great they are and how smart I am for suggesting them to you.

October is also my birthday month, and I am always open to receiving gifts. The gift of remaining housed and eating food is my favorite, and I can never have enough of that.

I Love Sea Turtles So Much (Don’t Read The News)

I am not a crier. At least, I am not a happy crier. I have cried exactly once from joy, and it was many years ago when I stepped into the Ghibli Museum. So maybe my life is devoid of joy or maybe Totoro is just that great. But there is one other thing that can and will make me cry. And that thing is sea turtles.

It is a cry that originates from the chest, that yearning joy that I assume is maybe what people feel like when they think about their kids (if they like their kids I guess). It’s the feeling that every single sea turtle on Earth is a precious entity that should be loved and protected at any cost. And if I see a sea turtle in real life, or I see a video of a sea turtle, or sometimes just a photo of a sea turtle, I will start tearing up.

I, in fact, love all turtles. (Remember, all tortoises are turtles but not all turtles are tortoises.) I grew up in the woods where there were many turtles. One time even a wood turtle. Which is the name of a real species of turtle, not a turtle made of wood. I am full of turtle facts.

But I did not grow up near the ocean, and have a pretty solid fear of drowning. Yet there is something about sea turtles, and just sea turtles, not any other type of turtle, that will make me start crying. I did once swim with sea turtles, and saw some babies up close, but the crying reaction pre-dates those interactions.

Was I a sea turtle in another life? Who knows.

All this to say, if you have any affection for sea turtles, you can do yourself a favor and do not read any news about sea turtles week. Or month. Just stay away from all mentions of sea turtles. Your life will not be made better by knowing about sad news about sea turtles. I wish I had avoided it. But it’s maybe not too late for you. Just avoid sea turtle talk online for a while. It’s for your own good so you don’t become enraged and start planning [REDACTED] like I did.

And if you have read any bad sea turtle news and would like to join me in [REDACTED] those motherfucking [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] their [REDACTED] until they [REDACTED], let me know.

Photography

Don’t You Ever Get Tired Of The Sky?

No. While there actually isn’t much to photograph around here aside from trees, a church, and the sky, I will never get tired of the sky. I love the sky. I especially love clouds. I love looking at clouds. I love everything about the sky. Do you not? Are you not in awe every time you see clouds or weather or a sunset or a sunrise or the moon or stars or that owl that keeps screaming every evening and you have only so far seen its wing flying by? The sky is full of air for breathing, does that not excite you? Are you dead inside?

TV/Film/Books

Get Off Your Computer (Or Phone), Turn On The TV

Okay, I mean that more metaphorically. You can use your computer to watch TV. It’s fine. I more mean stop being Very Online. Delete Tiktok. You don’t need a YouTube account. No corporate owned social media, no short-form video, no stupid fucking talking heads and edits and whatever the fuck else is going on. Climb every mountain, block every ad.

Do you remember “pivot to video“? When Facebook lied about how popular video was and faked all the numbers to trick content creators into video content because they were told that’s what people wanted? It’s not by chance that this coincided with the decline of literacy that’s happening right now.

Fiction narratives aka storytelling is a vital part of how human brains make sense of the world. When I yell at you to watch more TV, I do not mean “reality” bullshit. Like, maybe you can watch a baking show. But that’s it! Do not waste your precious time on this Earth on shit that is actively trying to destroy you and society. What companies are doing to people’s brains with short form video now will hopefully one day be a crime. Until then, I would urge you to find things to do that don’t involve influencers, streamers or anywhere you might start arguing with bots or be exposed to AIslop.

I worked in social media for over a decade. I know what I’m talking about. Run.

Run into the loving arms of TV, Books, and Film.

It’s Autumn

Calendar autumn is autumn. I’ll hear no cries of waiting for the Autumnal Equinox, because September is not summer no matter how hot. And as you can see, the black cats are already in bloom.
